Children’s eye examinations in Leyton

At Optical World, we welcome families and children of all ages. We’ve been part of the local community since 1948, and many of our patients first visited us as children themselves.

We’re known locally for being patient, friendly and great with kids. Our team takes the time to help children feel relaxed and comfortable, so their eye examination is a positive experience and not something to worry about.

Friendly, specialist eyecare for children

Children’s eyes are still developing, and changes can happen quickly. Regular eye examinations help make sure their vision is developing as it should and that any problems are picked up early.

You might want to book an eye test if your child:

  • Squints or screws up their eyes
  • Complains of headaches or tired eyes
  • Holds books, tablets or screens very close
  • Rubs their eyes often
  • Struggles with reading or schoolwork
  • Seems clumsy or bumps into things

If you have any concerns at all, we’re always happy to check and put your mind at ease.

Free NHS eye tests for children

Eye examinations are free on the NHS for all children under 16 https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/opticians/free-nhs-eye-tests-and-optical-vouchers/, and under 18s in full-time education.

Our optometrists have lots of experience working with children and will explain everything in a calm, friendly way that’s easy for both parents and children to understand.

What happens during a child’s eye test?

Your child’s appointment usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on their age and needs. We’ll check:

  • How clearly they can see
  • How their eyes work together
  • The overall health of their eyes

At the end of the appointment, we’ll talk through the results with you and answer any questions you may have. There’s never any pressure, just clear advice and support.

Managing short sight (myopia) in children

Short sight (myopia) is becoming more common in children, but there are now ways to help manage how quickly it progresses.

We offer myopia management options, including specialist spectacle lenses such as MiYOSMART lenses by Hoya, as well as suitable contact lens options for older children.

If your child is becoming more short sighted, we’ll talk you through the options, explain how they work in simple terms, and help you decide what’s right for your child and your family.
